Malva Pudding Recipe (Traditional South African Dessert)

Malva Pudding with Custard

We have the Malva Pudding KIT

Ingredients

For the pudding:

1 cup (200 g) sugar

2 large eggs

1 tbsp apricot jam

1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

¼ tsp salt

2 tbsp melted butter

½ cup (120 ml) milk

1 tsp vinegar or lemon juice (helps activate the baking soda)

For the sauce:

1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream

6 tbsp (85 g) butter

½ cup (100 g) sugar

¼ cup (60 ml) hot water

1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a baking dish (~20×20 cm).

Beat sugar and eggs together until thick and creamy. Stir in apricot jam.

Mix dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually fold into egg mixture.

Add melted butter, milk, and vinegar. Mix until smooth. Pour batter into prepared baking dish.

Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.

Make the sauce while pudding is baking: Melt butter in a saucepan, then add sugar, cream, water, and vanilla. Stir until smooth and slightly thickened.

Pour warm sauce over hot pudding as soon as it comes out of the oven. Let it soak in for a few minutes before serving.

Serve warm, ideally with custard, cream, or ice cream.
